Liar Liar Pants on Fire

Remember that post, oh, just a few days ago, where I proclaimed to the world my New Year's resolutions - no more cops, and knit from stash? Well, I've been wandering around blog land, reading everyone's New Year's Resolution - knit from stash, don't buy yarn, finish started projects, yadda yadda, and I had an epiphany. For me, that's all a big ol' lie (not the cops part, that's for real for real) - I truly have no intention of trying to knit from my stash - I love to buy yarn, and dammit, I'm gonna buy it - to my little heart's content.

So, here are my true resolutions -
  • I'm going to buy yarn, and I accept that.
  • I'm going to buy a lot of yarn, and I accept that too - in fact, I'm counting down the days until Maryland Sheep and Wool with glee.
  • I also accept that I may never knit the yarn that I buy - and I'm really ok with that, too.

It's healthier than crack, doesn't pack on the pounds like chocolate, and in actuality, it's not bankrupting me (that would be my gas bill every month). I did a lot of incredibly stupid things last year, but buying too much yarn was not one of them. I did a lot of costly things last year (like lending a schmuckhead $2500), and buying yarn didn't even come close to that.

So, for me to give up something that truly makes me happy would simply be foolhardy. And, I resolve, never to even try to trick myself into thinking that I'm going to pass on that new skein of Anne, or that no repeat Koigu.

I may need a diet, or abstinence, from a lot of things, but yarn is not one of them.

BRAVO!!!! That was so inspiring, I think I'll go buy some yarn myself. Thank you for the encouragement.

Those are some resolutions I can stick with too! I think I may borrow your list!

I couldn't have said it any better than that.

Indeed! As long as you can pay the bills - who cares what you spend on yarn?

I love your honesty Wendy, and completely agree with you. Live life, buy yarn and enjoy every minute of it. I don't even bother with resolutions - what's the point - it just leads to guilt and failure. No yarn diet here! I bet you work damn hard and deserve it.

Yay! I totally agree. Who wants rules with their knitting? It's a hobby, people, not a job.

Wishing you a guilt-free, yarn-laden 2007.

Amen Sista! My resolution (which isn't on my blog) is to take better care of myself. If I need to buy yarn to feel taken care of; so be it!

Very inspiring -- and sane. It's yarn, after all, with none of the debilitating effects of so many other pleasures. And it's sensual and beautiful. (And it's hard to eat while knitting.) Life is to be enjoyed. Thank goddess for yarn.

I do have a couple rules about buying yarn to keep me from getting into SABLE:

1) No yarn on credit cards (if you see me flash plastic, it's a debit card).

The exeception is at yarn fests where sometimes I use it for the saftey, and pay it off right away.

2) Yarn must all fit under the bed.

I do have an apartment, and that's my fiber storage area. Ikea sells great under the bed zippered cases. I think I can fit one more before I'm screwed.

3) Think a few seconds before I buy. Do I really need 900 pounds of MORE Koigu mill ends? Or would I rather have a few new skeins of Anne?

You go girl. Makes me want to go to the LYS...

I didn't even think of trying to knit solely from my stash, though I am going to try to remember to at least check it first (and then just buy a different color if I already have the one I want to knit with).

Abso-frickin-lutely! I'm with you 100%.

We're yarn sluts. Although I want another new lens for my camera, so I am going to try to knit from my stash.

I'm also going to try to come up for MSW. Can I still get a ride if I need one? Can we all split a hotel room?

Sound idea for you since you're now working in a yarn store! I'll live vicariously though as I work through my vintage yarn for awhile.

It'll be great to watch your fabulous purchases while I'm not having my own!

I always thought of this whole yarn diet as more of a "yarn appreciation." Just like food - eat reasonably the good stuff that you really want and forget the "cottage cheese" yarn that you're getting in its place because it "was there." Instead of 15 sale skeins, save for 3 good skeins. (Although I confess, I like cottage cheese. I know that most people don't, however.) Have a good hunk of koigu on me and then go for a walk! See, I can mix those metaphors with the best of 'em.

Yes, indeed! I'm right there with you. If you can afford it and it makes you happy, why not?

Hear, hear! I have been on a yarn binge since the 26th.

Thank you! How can you be a YarnSlut without yardage? Besides, someday you will be retired with lots of time and no money. You are stashing for retirement.

Good for you! Why not buy yarn if you enjoy it?
